As part of the planned installation procedure, the magnet was initially energized to 85 amps at 4.1 K and then deliberately quenched. The target operating current is ~ 113 Amps at 2.2 Kelvin.
As you will see in the movie, this quench is entirely deliberate and serves two purposes. First it helps to "train" the magnet by allowing the coils to move slightly in repsonse to the large induced forces. ( For a discussion of quenching and magnet training see this page ). The second purpose for this quench is to test the integrity of the magnet coils now they are in their new environment, and the performance of the quench protection system which continuously monitors and protects the magnet during an unplanned quench that may occur at a later date with the magnet at full field. As you will see in the movie below, this was a spectacular event. We are glad to say that the magnet performed really well, and after recooling it came to field with no problems.
