3. STARTING
THE NMR PROGRAM
3.1 STARTING A NEW
SESSION
Each research group that uses the NMR facility is given
an account on the spectrometers. Individual users from these groups share
the same account and this should be borne in mind when using these machines
so that your actions cause the minimum of inconvenience to the next user. You
should always start each session by logging out from any previous session
and loging back in to the spectrometer.
When you first arrive to use the machine:
1. Check for any messages from the previous user
- They may have left a message asking you to save their
experiment
2. If necessary log out from the previous user's session.
3. At the login prompt type the name of your group
4. At the prompt type in the password that you were
given
5. You will now be prompted for your NMRid and a short
project description.
- This information is used to track the spectrometer
usage.
6. The windows program should now start.
3.2 LAYOUT OF VNMR
WINDOWS
Once you have successfully logged on, the computer
will start up the window system and the Vnmr software will start
automatically. This may take a few minutes so be patient. Once everything
has successfully started the screen will appear as shown in Figure 3.1
Figure 3.1 Layout of Vnmr windows
after successful login
Command Window: This window is used to enter commands for Vnmr.
In addition this window contains many buttons which can be used in the
place of typed commands.
Graphics Window: The raw data and pulse sequences
are displayed in this window.
Text Window: Parameters and Vnmr messages are
displayed in this window.
Status Window: Displays the status of any acquisition
that is in progress. It includes the number of scans, time remaining,
sample temperature and number of experiments queued for acquisition.
Acquisition Window: This is a pop-up window which
allows the user to modify the shims and deuterium lock parameters. This
window is not available when acquisition is in progress.
Console Window: This normally appears as a small
icon and is opened by clicking on it. Generally it plays little role in
the routine use of Vnmr. However, it is in very important as system messages
are displayed in this window if an error occurs. If you encounter difficulties
in acquiring data you should check this window before contacting the facility
managers for assistance.
The user can open additional windows for editing files
etc. by holding down the right mouse button and selecting from the "Windows"
sub-menu. There are also the usual set of X/unix facilities available
through these windows. Additional important options in the pop-up menu
are Vnmr Help and Vnmrx. The latter can be used to restart Vnmr if it
crashes for any reason.
